eBay's future...as a bank DC 08-22-2008

ABC News http://easyurl.net/9b23

"...When you study the company's financials, you suddenly
appreciate that eBay is no longer an auction company, or
even a retailer…but a bank. PayPal, eBay's subsidiary
payment processing operation, turns out to be the company's
big cash cow.

"And so, the most important part of Tuesday's announcement
was not what everybody noticed -- the shift to fixed
pricing -- but what appeared to be an afterthought: eBay's
announcement that it was eliminating payment via checks and
money orders and shifting all electronic transactions
through PayPal.

"This announcement, little more than a footnote, is the
real story about eBay this week. Amazon aside, this is
eBay's actual new business strategy..."

I just wish I knew what the revenue mix is for Pay Pal. Buyers can either have
their credit cards charged (risky for PP) or ACHed out of the buyers' bank
accounts (little risk). If most of the cash flow is generated by ACHing money,
Pay Pal can be a great cash cow. Otherwise, PP would be liable for credit card
chargebacks if the buyer is dissatisfied with the products, over which eBay has
little control.

"With new security steps and plans for a debit card, eBay's
online payment service is taking on its finance rivals. In
Europe, it's even got a banking license..."
