Just received some cash from Cadbury shares take over by Kraft can I offset
the capital gains tax on excess money by purchasing some shares in other
companies before end of tax year.

Just buy shares that will go down in price and then sell.

If the price goes up, sell and pay your taxes with the profit.

You offset capital gains taxes by selling other holdings with losses. You
must have some losers.
