How to preserve 401k match after leaving job? radraccoon 11-17-2006

I quit my old job about a month and a half ago. I've already started
work at a new job. At my old job, the 401k contirbution matching
didn't vest until 3 years of employment (I was only there about 1.5
years.) The unvested matching has not yet been withdrawn by my
emlpoyer from my 401k account. Is there anything I can do to keep it
from being withdrawn? If I try to transfer it to my new 401k is the
administrator more or less likely to catch the oversight? If I leave
the account as is, is it possible the mony will never be taken out?

That's not surprising. Many plans leave the unvested money
in the account until you withdraw it. I imagine that this
is because there's always the chance you could come back to
the employer in the future and complete the service needed
to vest it.

Go back to work for the employer and complete the service
needed to vest it :-)

I doubt there's any oversight in the first place.

It's possible. Just like it's possible the sun might not rise tomorrow :)

At the risk of sounding like a troll...

This newsgroup is about financial planning, not robbing your employer.
If you aren't vested in that money, it's not yours. It's as simple as
that. Looking for a loophole so that you can keep that money is
tantamount to trying to steal from your employer.
