Do "total returns" include fund operating expenses?

When a fund prospectus shows historical "total returns",
I believe they include dividend and capital gain distributions
as well as changes in net asset value.

Do "total returns" include fund operating expenses, aka
the "expense ratio"? That is, are fund operating expenses
deducted from returns?
