Comparing 529 college savings plans tseverson 12-10-2006

My niece and her husband (residents of Florida) are planning to start a
college fund for their baby daughter (4 months old). They are
considering 529 savings plans and also 529 prepaid tuition plans.

Is there a place (web site or magazine or ?) that tracks the
individual state plans and compares or rates the various state plans. I
am hoping there is a single location keeping track of the returns
earned by the individual state plans and publishing the information.

I am also wondering if there are any state plans investing in a basket
of index funds. I hope my neice doesn't have my ability to pick mutual
funds and other investments that do not beat the index funds they are
measured against.

Are there other types of college saving plans to consider in addition
to the 529s?

Any comments or opinions on this topic are appreciated.

TIA, Terry

Hello Terry,

I have found the site www.savingforcollege.com as a valuable resource.
They compare and rate plans and there is a fourm for asking questions.
I have found 529s to be the best vehicle for our children's college
savings.

Good luck,
Patrick

Clark Howard recently updated his reviews on 529 plans:
